There’s nothing my kids love more than cake. Add a Disney•Pixar theme to the mix? Perfection! So, I made this delicious Coco-themedcake inspired by a very important element of the film: the symbolic guitar. Not only did my kids love the design but the moist chocolatey center, vanilla buttercream frosting, and candy details didn’t hurt either.
You can now rent a mansion with candy-themed rooms and an ice cream-shaped pool in Mount Dora, Florida.; From laser tag and a ball pit to a 1,400-square-foot karaoke nightclub, the 'Sweet Escape Mansion' will make all of your childhood dreams come to life.; The house, which is a 45-minute drive from Disney World, sleeps up to 52 people and boasts 10 bedrooms and five bathrooms.
I chose this cake since the main character in the film, Miguel, has a passion for music that he pursues wholeheartedly. The guitar that belongs to his idol Ernesto de la Cruz plays an iconic role in the film, so I thought it would be fun to recreate the guitar as a celebratory cake. My kids enjoyed chowing down on the treat and it gave me the opportunity to remind them about the importance of following their dreams.
Whether you have a passion for music or eating chocolate cake (like my family and I!), this cake will do the trick!
Disney•Pixar’s Coco is available on Digital 2/13 and on Blu-ray 2/27.

- 1 3/4 cup flour
- 1 3/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup cocoa
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
- FROSTING:
- 2 sticks butter, softened
- 3-4 cups confection’s sugar, sifted
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- DECORATIONS:
- Black candy melts
- Zip-top bag and scissors (or piping bag, coupler, and tip)
- 2″ circular cookie cutter
- Black licorice strings
- Mini chocolate candies
Helpful Tip
If you want to make buttercream frosting ahead, place it in an airtight container and refrigerate. When ready to use, let the frosting come to room temperature, then beat again with the mixer until fluffy.
Directions
- Preheat over to 350° F.
- In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In mixing bowl, beat oil, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla for 1 minute. Add dry ingredients to wet and stir until combined. Pour in hot water and mix together.
- Grease or spray bottom and sides of cake pan. (This cake can either be made in a guitar cake pan or 13×9” pan.) Bake for 22-27 minutes. Then place a toothpick in the center to check if it’s done. (If you’re using a 13×9″ pan, you will need to cut out the body, neck, and head separately.)
- Let cake cool while you create the frosting.
- Place softened butter into a bowl of a stand mixer that has been fitted with the paddle attachment. Turn the mixer on a medium setting and cream the butter until it’s smooth, about 3 minutes.
- Add confection’s sugar, 1/2 a cup at a time. After each cup has been incorporated, turn the mixer onto the highest setting for about 10 second to lighten the frosting.
- Add vanilla and a pinch of salt, and combine until well incorporated.
- Add milk until the frosting has reached the preferred consistency.
- After it has cooled completely, frost the cake.
- Then start your decorating! Draw or print your guitar designs on paper. (Use a 2″ circular cookie cutter for the center.) Then place parchment paper on top. Secure the paper to the sheet with masking tape.
- Melt candy melts according to the package. Pour the melted candy into a zip-top bag and snip off one corner to make a piping bag (or use piping bag, coupler, and tip).
- Follow the design on your template, piping the pieces you want to include. (If the chocolate in the bag starts to set, heat in a microwave-safe container for 10 seconds at a time until melted, then add back to your bag.)
- Once candy melt decorations are dry, remove from parchment paper and place decorations onto cake. (If needed, use frosting to “glue” pieces onto cake.)
- Add licorice strings from the top of the guitar neck to the rectangular bridge. Then use mini candies for pins on the bridge.
